The character of Rob Hall is probably my favorite in the book Into Thin Air, not only because he is intelligent and quick-witted, but also because he's extremely competent. When a character is incredibly good at what they do, they make the audience like them a lot more, no matter if what they do is targeted assassinations, driving, or mountaineering. On page 104, Hall says "With so many incompetent people on the mountain, I think it's pretty unlikely that we'll get through this season without something bad happening up high." This shows not only his knowledge of mountain climbing, but also his disdain for people who know next to nothing about it and still come to Everest for the yuks.
Jason Clarke is set to play Rob Hall in the upcoming film "Everest." It will be released in 2015 and will also star Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin.
Any character who has an extremely good knowledge of what they do will immediately garner respect from other characters and from the story's audience. In the book The Da Vinci Code, Robert Langston gains the reader's respect through his knowledge of art and symbols. In the classic film Raiders of the Lost Ark, archaeologist Indiana Jones wins the audience over within the first five minutes through his ability to conquer ancient temples unscathed, not to mention his extensive knowledge of history. Without a doubt, characters who know what they're doing are more likely to get into the audience's heads than characters who don't.
