After reading the first
section of Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer it was extremely interesting to learn
about the immense difficulties of climbing 29,028 feet. It is insane how much
people put into trekking this mountain even with all the risks although, it
does not surprise me. Mt. Everest is a very intriguing place. It is the highest
place on earth, it is the coldest place beside the Polar Regions, and it must
be extremely beautiful. Seeing how much Mt. Everest has impacted our past
really showed that it deserved to be recognized as one of the most important
places in the world, and that is why it is called the Third Pole.
“After the American
explorer Robert Peary claimed to have reached the North Pole in 1909 and Roald
Amundsen led Norwegian party to the South Pole in 1911, Everest- the so called
Third Pole- became the most coveted object in the realm of terrestrial exploration.”
(16).
The fact that Mt.
Everest is referred to as the third pole just shows how much it has interested
us in the past and still today. Mt. Everest was discovered to be the highest
point on earth in 1852 and many believe that is why it is known as the Third
Pole. According to shipbright.wordpress.com the Third Pole is known for its amazingly
high altitude and the amount of snow and glaciers it holds. Forty percent of
the world’s population depends on Mt. Everest as a source of fresh water
because of melt off from these famous glaciers. Mount Everest is the coldest
place outside of the Polar Regions which is why some call it the Third Pole
thinking it deserves the name because of the freezing temperatures and extreme
altitudes.
I had never heard this nick name for Mount Everest before. I had no idea so many people depend on the run off for water, who would have know. There are also many other nick names for Mount Everest including; the Roof of the World and The Goddess Mother of the Earth. It is called the roof of the world, because at a time i was thought to be the tallest mountain in the world. According to Nations Online, it is called The Goddess Mother of the Earth because in Tibet the mountain is named Chomolungma, which means, mother goddess of the universe or "Saint Mother". In Nepal the mountain is named Sagarmatha which means, head/god/goddess of the sky. The name name came from a combination of the two names because of the Tibet and Nepal side of the mountain.
