Into Thin Air: Doug Hansen

                                                                                                                                                  Sam Brito
                                                                                                                                                     3-17-14

A character I would like to talk about is Doug Hansen. Doug as a character was introduced fairly in the beginning of the story and came to seem like a weakling. As we progressed into the story more, we see that Doug actually has become one of the stronger characters. I didn't even think that Doug was going to make it to Base Camp in the first place, but he really did surprise me in the end. I mean not in the end of the book...but you know. Anyways, when I was reading into Doug, everyone seemed to keep supporting him in some way. Rob had a conversation with him for a bit and then as Lou stated on page 173-174, "When I moved up beside him, he told me he was cold and feeling bad and was heading down." They then continued saying in Krakauer's view. "But the upshot was that Doug got back in line and continued his ascent. This to me really has shown how Doug has grown since the beginning. I doubted him but has come to surprise me with his endless effort to make it to the top. The overall thing here is that Doug to me is a character in development. He was weak and now is growing to find that he was a weakling and is now proving everyone wrong. I find him fascinating this way truly.

I look forward to keep reading in this book, to see how Doug will continue to grow. He definitely teaches me how to never give up and he certainly does want you to know that. So as we continue, I can't wait to see Doug become the strong guy I know he can be.
